28 January 2008
In December 2008, Shanghai MRT Pudong Line Development Co. Ltd. has awarded a contract to the Vehicle Consortium consisting of Hitachi, Ltd. (Hitachi), Yongji Xinshisu Electric Equipment Co., Ltd. (Yongji) and CNR Changchun Railway Vehicles Co., Ltd. (CRC) for the supply of 168 EMU’s. According to the contract, Hitachi and Yongji, together with their joint venture company Hitachi Yonge Electric Equipment (Xi’an) Co., Ltd. (HYEE) jointly manufacture and supply the Electric traction systems, while CRC completes and supplies the rolling stocks. The rolling stocks supplied under the said contract will be used in Shanghai Metro network, so as to meet the ridership demands especially for Shanghai World Expo 2010.
Hitachi established HYEE in the city of Xi’an, PRC in August 2003, to explore the rapidly growing Chinese railway market with its products such as VVVF inverters, Air-conditioning equipment and Ventilation equipment for EMU’s. HYEE has supplied its products to Ministry of Railways, Beijing Subway and Chongqing Metro.
This remarkable achievement of Hitachi’s winning the contract in Shanghai Metro market as the first Japanese manufacturer shows Hitachi’s competitiveness against major international manufactures in the Railway industry, while it also shows Hitachi’s capability to provide cost-effective products and top-quality services to the railway market in PRC.
Hitachi plans to further pursue opportunities in ever growing railway market in PRC, together with Chinese partner companies.
