Hitachi’s Industrial Systems (Vice President and Executive Officer: Gaku Suzuki) concluded a contract with Korea Railroad (KORAIL) for 32 Limited Express Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) railcars (composed of 8 train sets). It has been 32 years for Hitachi to come back to the Korean railway rolling stock market since Hitachi delivered the trains for the Seoul Subway Line No.1 in 1974.
The new Limited Express EMU railcars are expected to link the Seoul metropolitan area and Onyang-oncheon, known as the earliest hot spring resort in Korea, in the beginning of 2009. In the Medium and long term, KORAIL has been planning to replace the diesel/ electric locomotives, Mugunghwa and Saemaeul that are currently in operation, with this time introduced model of EMU railcars in accordance with the expansion of electrification in the suburban railway network.
In the technical evaluation process for the tender of this project, Hitachi had been highly appreciated for its advanced technologies, high qualities and rich experiences in the field of railcar manufacturing, based on its “A-train” manufacturing method whose characteristics are consisted of the Aluminum Double Skin Structure, the revolutionary Friction Stir Welding (FSW), the Module Interior Fitting, the Mounting Rail Fastening, etc.
Through the execution of this project, based on the introduction of updated technologies and abundant experiences, Hitachi desire to be accepted as a significant member of the Korean railway society and to contribute to the further development of the railway technologies in Korea.
