Series 885

In service : March 2000
Operator : Kyushu Railway Company
The white "Kamome" limited express cars which came into service in March 2000 are a limited express version of the "A-Train" family that revolutionized structure and production methods in answer to issues facing the 21st century such as lifecycle costs, recycling and reuse. Its features include an aluminium double-skin structure, FSW, and modular rigging. Tilting control of cars enables the distance between Hakata and Nagasaki to be covered in 1 hour and 50 minutes. The carriages present a journey into the next generation with their ordinary seats made of real leather according to executive specifications, the warm flooring in all the carriages, and the lighting giving the effect of a shower of light. They were awarded the Grand Prix in the long-distance passenger category in the 2001 Brunel awards, the sole international competition concerned with railway design.
Gauge : 1,067 mm
Electric system : 20 kV ac, 60 Hz
Train formation : 3M3T
Train ratings (continuous) : 12 x 190 kW
Car body : Aluminium-alloy double-skinned construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, gear coupling drive
Traction Control system : PWM converter / VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximum service speed : 130 km/h
Rockhampton Tilt Train

In Service : 1998
Operator : Queensland Rail (Australia)
Queensland Rail's Rockhampton Tilt Train is a special express tilting train that covers the distance of 623 km between Brisbane and Rockhampton in seven hours. Traction system, tilting control system, and tilting bogie parts were supplied in 1998.Car bodys and Bogies were manufactured by EDI Rail, Walkers Pty. Ltd., in Australia. The maximum service speed of 160 km/h is the highest one on a narrow-gauge track.
Gauge : 1,067mm
Electric system : 25kVac, 50Hz
Train Formation : 4M2T
Train ratings (continuous) : 16 x 190 kW
Car body : Stainless steel
Traction Control system : PWM converter / VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Car body Tilting Angle : +/-5deg.
Maximum service speed : 160km/h
Series 883

In Service : March 1996
Operator : Kyushu Railway Company (Nippo Line)
It is the world's first AC train on a narrow-gauge track to employ an active-control tilt system. To achieve this, the car body has been made lighter and its center of gravity lowered. The electrical parts of the traction circuit are distributed between the motor cars and trailers to equalize the tare weights of the cars as much as possible. The train is capable of starting and running with one unit in the open state on upgraded sections at a continuous inclination of 25%.
Gauge : 1,067mm
Electric system : 20kV ac, 60Hz
Train formation : 3M4T
Train ratings (one hour) : 12 x 190kW
Car body : Stainless steel construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, gear coupling drive
Traction Control system : PWM converter / Thyristor phase control and VVVF inverter control with rheostatic and holding brakings
Maximum service speed : 130km/h
Series 283

In Service : July 1996
Operator : West Japan Railway Company (Kisei Line)
This train was put into revenue service on the Kise Line which has a sequence of curved sections. Since the train runs through the curved sections at high speed, it employs an active-control tilt system. The VVVF inverter using IGBT controls a traction motor independently.
Gauge : 1,067mm
Electric system : 1,500V dc
Train formation : 2M4T
Train ratings (one hour) : 8 x 220kW
Car body : Mild steel construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, gear coupling drive
Traction Control system : VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximum service speed : 130km/h
Series 383

In Service : June 1996
Operator : Central Japan Railway Company (Chuo Main Line)
This train features active-control tilt to enable it to run faster through curved sections. The train was put into revenue service on the Chuo Line which has a sequence of curved sections. It has a fixed 8-car 3M5T formation.
Gauge : 1,067mm
Electric system : 1,500V dc
Train formation : 3M5T
Train ratings (one hour) : 12 x 155kW
Car body : Stainless steel construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, flexible coupling drive
Traction Control system : VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximum service speed : 130km/h
Series E351

In Service : December 1994
Operator : East Japan Railway Company (Chuo Main Line)
This train has an active-control tilt system for increased speed through curved sections to shorten travel times of inter-city transit services. In order to lower the car body's center of gravity, asplit air conditioning system is employed, with the condenser unit installed under the floor and the evaporator unit mounted on the ceiling.
Gauge : 1,067mm
Electric system : 1,500V dc
Train formation : 6M6T
Train ratings (one hour) : 24 x 150kW
Car body : Mild steel construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, flexible coupling drive
Traction Control system : VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximum service speed : 130km/h
Series 8000

In Service : June 1992
Operator : Shikoku Railway Company
The train features active-control tilt to enable it to run faster through curved sections. This train has lighter cars and a lower center of gravity than conventional trains. To ensure stable current collection, a slide type pantograph fixing stand is used. The pantograph position is kept on the center of the track even through curves with car body tilting.
Gauge : 1,067mm
Electric system : 1,500V dc
Train formation : 2M3T
Train ratings (one hour) : 8 x 200kW
Car body : Stainless steel construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, flexible coupling drive
Traction Control system : VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximum service speed : 130km/h
