Series 800

Photo of "Series 800"

In Service : March 2004
Operator : Kyushu Railway Company (Kyushu Shinkansen )

This Series 800 train, known as "Tsubame", is scheduled to make its debut in March 2004, between Shin-Yatsushiro and Kagoshima Chuo stations of Kyushu Shinkansen line. Not only employing existing Shinkansen technologies, these unique train sets also have traction motors in all cars to deal with frequent curves. Since 70% of the section is in tunnel, more attention is paid to reduce interior noise. Moreover, traditional Japanese handicrafts are employed, such as cherry and Japanese cinnamon trees, Nishijin weaving textiles*, rush-made curtains, and ancient Japanese lacquer color. These contribute to representing magnificent and comfortable space for passenger to enjoy their time during train travel.

  • *Note: Nishijin weaving textiles is one of the famous Japanese weaving techniques, founded in Kyoto.

In Service : March 1999
Operator : Central Japan Railway Company (Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen Line)
This train set has a fixed 16-car 12M4T formation. The car body is made by special double skin construction method using aluminum-alloy hollow section extrusions to realize weight reduction and quieter interior. New technologies such as semi-active control for the car body and damper between adjacent cars is adopted to improve riding comfort. To reduce external running noise, the most appropriate design for the pantograph cover and car body front shape has been selected according to experience and test results.

Gauge : 1,435mm
Electric system : 25kV ac, 60Hz
Train formation : 12M4T
Train ratings (continuous) : 48 x 275kW
Car body : Aluminum-alloy construction

Maximum service speed : 285 km/h

Series 300

Photo of "Series 300"

In Service : March 1992
Operator : Central Japan Railway Company (Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen Line)
To achieve high-speed operation, the car body is made of aluminum alloy, which reduces weight, reinforces the car body and makes it more airtight. Bolsterless bogies make the train run smoothly on curves and add stability during high-speed operation. The control system is a voltage source inverter for better performance as well as energy conservation, with AC regenerative braking. The new train has a fixed 16-car 10M6T formation.

Gauge : 1,435mm
Electric system : 25kV ac, 60Hz
Train formation : 10M6T
Train ratings (continuous) : 40 x 300kW,
Car body : Aluminum-alloy construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, gear coupling drive
Traction control system : PWM converter / VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximum service speed : 270km/h

Series E4

Photo of "Series E4"

In Service : December 1997
Operator : East Japan Railway Company (Tohoku Shinkansen Line)
It consists entirely of double-deckers and has a fixed 8-car 4M4T formation. The seated passenger capacity is 1,634 with a 16-car train formation. The car body has an aluminum-alloy, airtight construction. The traction equipment is installed on the deck floors of the car ends, and the middle double-deck sections of the car are entirely used as passenger space. A 3-level IGBT converter/inverter is applied in the traction system.

Gause : 1,435mm
Electric system : 25kV ac, 50Hz
Train formation : 4M4T
Train ratings (continuous) : 16 x 420kW
Car body : Aluminum-alloy construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, gear coupling drive
Traction control system : PWM converter / VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximun service speed : 240km/h

Series E2
