Series E257

In service : December 2001
Operator : East Japan Railway Company (Chuo Line)
Series E257 cars have been introduced for limited express services running on the Chuo-Higashi line between Shinjuku and Matsumoto. They make positive use of Hitachi's own original "A-Train" concept. These are "A-Train" carriages with aluminium double-skinned bodies and interior fixtures based on modular construction methods. In consideration of vibration and noise, rubber is used as the flooring material to ensure passengers a full degree of comfort.

Car body : Aluminium-alloy double-skinned construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, flexible coupling drive
Traction Control system : VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximum service speed : 130 km/h
Series 683

In service : March 2001 (Hokuriku Line)
Operator : West Japan Railway Company
System 683 cars, known familiarly as "Thunderbird", were introduced in 2001 for use with limited express services on the Hokuriku-honsen Line. They make positive use of Hitachi's own original "A-Train" concept. The bodies are of the large hollow aluminium double-skinned type and are highly robust and precise. The independent modular construction method is used for the interior fixtures.

Electric system : 20 kV ac, 60 Hz / 1,500 V dc
Train formation : 2M4T
Train ratings (one hour) : 8 x 245 kW
Car body : Aluminium-alloy double-skinned construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, flexible coupling drive
Traction Control system : PWM converter / VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximum service speed : 130 km/h (160 km/h)
Series 885

In Service : March 2000
Operator : Kyushu Railway Company
The white "Kamome" limited express cars which came into service in March 2000 are a limited express version of the "A-Train" family that revolutionized structure and production methods in answer to issues facing the 21st century such as lifecycle costs, recycling and reuse. Its features include an aluminium double-skin structure, FSW, and modular rigging. Tilting control of cars enables the distance between Hakata and Nagasaki to be covered in 1 hour and 50 minutes. The carriages present a journey into the next generation with their ordinary seats made of real leather according to executive specifications, the warm flooring in all the carriages, and the lighting giving the effect of a shower of light. They were awarded the Grand Prix in the long-distance passenger category in the 2001 Brunel awards, the sole international competition concerned with railway design.
Gauge : 1,067 mm
Electric system : 20 kV ac, 60 Hz
Train formation : 3M3T
Train ratings (continuous) : 12 x 190 kW
Car body : Aluminium-alloy double-skinned construction
Bogie and driving system : Bolsterless bogie, air suspension, gear coupling drive
Traction Control system : PWM converter / VVVF inverter control with regenerative braking
Maximum service speed : 130 km/h
Series 20000

In Service : March 2000
Operator : Seibu Railway Co., Ltd.
Series 20000 cars operated by Seibu Railway Company were introduced in Seibu Shinjuku Line in March 2000. Series 20000 cars are based on Hitachi's original "A-train" concept. The main features of the cars include their aluminum double-skinned structure, FSW and unpainted hairline finish. The interior fittings are similar to those of Series 6000, although improvements have been made in quality and maintenance properties through the use of modular rigging. The main circuits use IGBT inverter devices and light maintenance main motors in order to facilitate maintenance and reduce noise to a minimum.
Gauge : 1,067 mm
